NFL: Jets deal draft picks for Tebow (CNNSI)

Posted March 21, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -- It's Tebow Time on Broadway.

The New York Jets acquired Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, bringing the polarizing quarterback to a team that just recently gave starter Mark Sanchez a three-year contract extension.

Denver general manager Brian Xanders said the Broncos will receive fourth- and sixth-round draft picks, while New York gets a seventh-rounder - all in 2012.

The trade first was reported by Fox Sports.

Tebow, who became expendable when the Broncos signed Peyton Manning to a five-year deal, is expected to complement Sanchez, who received a $40.5 million contract extension, with $20.5 million guaranteed, earlier this month. The Jets also had pursued Manning.

Tebow led the Broncos to the playoffs last season - along the way beating Sanchez and the Jets, who missed the postseason. But Denver executive John Elway believed Manning gave the team a better chance at winning a championship now.

For the Jets, Tebow is expected to add a versatile dimension to the offense, including running the team's wildcat package - something new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano enjoys using. He also provides a solid presence in a locker room that was strife with infighting last season - particularly between Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes.

He also brings with him a flock of fervent fans for reasons that have to do as much with his faith as his football skills. A devout Christian, he's been a role model since his days at Florida, when he led the Gators to two national titles and captured the Heisman Trophy.

Several teams, including his hometown Jacksonville Jaguars, reportedly were interested in acquiring Tebow.

On Tuesday, Sanchez spoke highly of both Tebow and Manning on Fox Sports Radio in Los Angeles.

"I think Peyton is going to do great, and I think Tim is going to do great no matter what happens," Sanchez said on "The Petros & Money Show." "He can learn from one of the best quarterbacks to ever play or he moves on somewhere else and uses his skills at another ball club. He definitely has talent. He knows how to win. He knows how to impact players, so both guys are really in a good situation. It'll work out for both of them."

The effect Tebow's presence will have on Sanchez remains to be seen. The Jets appear to be committed to him as their starter for at least the next two years, but a restless fan base that got down on Sanchez as he struggled late last season could call for Tebow to take over at the first sign of trouble.

It appears, though, Tebow will be coming to New York to give the Jets an element on offense they lost after not re-signing wide receiver Brad Smith last offseason. Smith was often used as the team's wildcat quarterback, and had some success.

The Jets signed free agent Drew Stanton last week to be their No. 2 quarterback, ahead of Greg McElroy, the team's seventh-round draft pick last year. General manager Mike Tannenbaum said Monday that he was confident in the trio, but added: "I'll give you my standard answer, which is you never know if other opportunities present themselves. We'll always look at it. That's the standard line there, but we feel good about Greg, Drew and Mark, and see where we go from there."

And that led them to Tebow.

Elway and Broncos coach John Fox called Tebow on Monday night to tell him it was possible he would be traded.

"I'm sure he was disappointed," Elway said Tuesday during the news conference to introduce Manning. "He didn't come out and say he was disappointed. I think it was a typical Tim Tebow response in the fact that he was very positive, and he said, `Well, we're talking about Peyton Manning, and I understand exactly what you're doing."'

Elway said he wanted to do right by Tebow, who took over a 1-4 team and led the Broncos to the AFC West title and a playoff win over Pittsburgh.

"It would be our goal to get him in the best situation possible for him to have success also," Elway said.

Tebow's base salaries for the next few seasons are very cap friendly: $1.942 million in 2012, $2.266 million in 2013 and $2.590 million in 2014 - something else that clearly appealed to the Jets.

The Jets and Rex Ryan saw up close what Tebow can do for a team, as he led the Broncos on a 95-yard drive last November to beat New York in a game that set off a series on incredible comebacks for the quarterback.

Sanchez, when asked about potentially using the wildcat more often, said he didn't particularly enjoy lining up as a wide receiver.

"I don't know if I'm very good split out like that," he told Fox Sports Radio with a laugh. "And I don't like coming off the field."

Although the unorthodox QB energized the Broncos with a series of fourth-quarter comebacks last season, Tebow's messy mechanics and flawed footwork led to accuracy issues. And with his eagerness to run, he's hardly the prototypical pocket passer.

The Broncos changed their offense midseason to fit his unique skill set, dusting off the option offense, and it revitalized them as they soared to the top of the NFL rushing charts. But their passing game remained stuck in neutral as Tebow completed just 46 percent of his throws.

Tebow's days were numbered in Denver when Manning chose the Broncos as his next destination. They are two entirely different quarterbacks and it made little sense to keep Tebow as a backup because the Broncos were going to have a vastly different offense under Manning, one of the most precise passers in league history.

Texans give up on DeMeco Ryans; ship him to Philly

Posted March 21, 2012

The linebacker-needy Philadelphia Eagles just picked up a 27-year-old former All-Pro and Pro Bowl linebacker for a fourth-round pick. I hope the Texans also got a bouquet of flowers and flowers out of the deal.

DeMeco Ryans, who had fallen out of favor in Houston (with coaches, but certainly not with teammates ‒ more on that in a minute), will now be anchoring the middle of the Eagles defense.

The Texans were willing to let him go for a song because they really didn't have a place for him anymore. Ryans missed most of 2010 with an Achilles injury, and saw his playing time drop dramatically in 2011 as the Texans switched to a 3-4 defense. The Eagles will put him back in the middle of a 4-3.

Ryans was a captain and a respected teammate in Houston, and no one on the Texans defense seems particularly happy with the move. Jerome Solomon, who covers the Texans for the Houston Chronicle, shared these texts he got from current or former Texans teammates:

"Damn, man, and they talk about loyalty."

"Cold-blooded, man, cold-blooded. But Meco will be better off for it. He's going to dominate in Philly."

"They don't what leadership means, do they? Bet they won't finish No. 2 in defense next season."

Texans defensive end said this on Sirius XM NFL Radio:

"It's a big surprise to me. I don't know what is going on at this moment but DeMeco is a great player, a leader. He's going to be an asset to each and every team he plays for. … Our defense is going to miss him. That's all I can say about it. I'm not in agreeance with it."

There are times when a guy means more to a unit than his stats represent. This would not be the first time in sports history a team underestimated the value of a player's leadership and ended up paying dearly for it. But at the same time, with what the Wade Phillips and the Texans were able to accomplish with their defense last year, they've earned the benefit of the doubt. Darryl Sharpton, a third-year player will step into his spot, after making 12 tackles in eight games last year.

Texans general manager Rick Smith released this statement on the decision to trade Ryans:

"DeMeco Ryans contributed significantly toward helping us build the foundation we hope will bring a world championship to the city of Houston.  His professionalism and leadership cannot be over-exaggerated.  This move was mutually beneficial for the Texans immediate and long-term goals, DeMeco's career, and the Philadelphia Eagles.  We appreciate all the hard work and effort DeMeco invested in our organization and wish him only the best moving forward.  He is a class act."

And here's Eagles head coach Andy Reid, barely able to contain his glee:

"DeMeco is a proven Pro Bowl linebacker in this league and we're excited to be able to plug him into the middle of our defense," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He's been the signal caller and a leader on a very good Texans defense for the last several years. He's a tough, instinctive football player and he'll be a great fit for our team."

NBA: Wizards acquire Nene, move JaVale McGee, Nick Young in three-way deal (SportingNews)

Posted March 15, 2012

The Washington Wizards have acquired Nene from the Denver Nuggets in a three-way deal that sends JaVale McGee to Denver and Nick Young to the Los Angeles Clippers, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The Washington Post, reporting that the trade was close, says the deal would also send Wizards forward Ronny Turiaf to Denver and Clippers forward Brian Cook and a draft pick to Washington.

Nene, 29, is averaging 13.4 points and 7.4 rebounds so far this season after passing on several other offers in free agency to sign a five-year, $67 deal with the Nuggets. Last season, the 6-11 power forward led the NBA in field-goal percentage.

"I understood it's a business but friends, family, trust, care, you're not going to find in another place," Nene said at the time. "(Owner) Josh (Kroenke) and (GM) Masai (Ujiri), they told me you're very important and they showed me. I sat down with my family, with my friends and we made the smart decision.

"I feel good here. I love Denver. I've said in the past I wanted to be here and here I am. I feel like a rookie right now and it's exciting to think about reaching another big goal and bringing the Denver Nuggets to the top."

McGee, 23, is an extremely talented 7-footer who, at times, seems to make inexplicable decisions; this season alone, he has run back on defense while his team had the ball; thrown an alley-oop to himself on a fast break; and goaltended a ball several rows into the stands.

The Wizards, according to multiple reports, had quietly made the former first-round pick available in recent days. He's averaging 11.8 pounds, 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.

Young, 26, is another former first-round pick who has produced (16.6 points per game) with serious asterisks (.406 field-goal percentage). He'll attempt to fill the Clippers' hole at shooting guard created by Chancey Billups' injury.

The move comes in the wake of Los Angeles' acquisition of point guard Ramon Sessions from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Fisher, drafted in 1996 along with Kobe Bryant, has played all but three of his NBA seasons for the Lakers and has won five NBA championships with the franchise.

Hill, 23, is averaging 5.0 points and 4.8 rebounds for the Rockets this season. He was the No. 8 pick in 2009 by the New York Knicks, who traded him to Houston midway through his rookie year. His career averages are 5.4 points and 4.2 rebounds.

NBA: Warriors trade Stephen Jackson to Spurs for Richard Jefferson (Boston Herald)

Posted March 15, 2012

OAKLAND, Calif. — A person with knowledge of the negotiations says the Golden State Warriors have agreed to trade Stephen Jackson to the San Antonio Spurs for small forward Richard Jefferson.

Golden State acquired Jackson — who helped the Warriors reach the second round of the playoffs in 2007 — and center Andrew Bogut from the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday for Monta Ellis, Ekpe Udoh and Kwame Brown. There was immediate thought that the Warriors would then try to deal Jackson by Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.

The 31-year-old Jefferson is averaging 9.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this season for the Spurs.

NBA: Dwight Howard staying with Magic (YAHOO)

Posted March 15, 2012

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

Dwight Howard will remain with the Orlando Magic for at least one more season after formally waiving the early termination option in his contract, team officials told Yahoo! Sports.

Howard’s decision is a big victory for the Magic and capped a wild week that saw Howard flip-flop about his future intentions until the final hours before the NBA’s trade deadline. By waiving the option, Howard will remain under contract with the Magic through the 2012-13 season and postpone his free agency for at least one more summer.

Way back in training camp, Howard had asked the Magic to trade him and gave them three preferred destinations: the New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks or Los Angeles Lakers. The Nets had always ranked first on Howard’s list, league sources said, until he started second-guessing his desire to leave Orlando.

After Howard repeatedly changed his mind Wednesday on whether to sign a waiver for his contract’s early termination option for the 2012-13 season – he told Magic officials he would be back next season then told them later in the day he wouldn’t commit to signing the waiver, allowing him to enter free agency on July 1 – he delivered a late-night interview to a basketball website that incredibly reversed course again.

Howard told RealGM he would sign the paperwork for the waiver to remain with the Magic through the 2012-13 season and forgo free agency.

“Man, listen, you know my heart, my soul and everything I have is in Orlando,” Howard told RealGM. “I just can’t leave it behind.”

Howard also said in the interview that he had received “bad advice” in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline.

“I apologize for this circus I have caused to the fans of our city,” he said. “They didn’t deserve none of this.”

[ Also: Mike D’Antoni resigns as Knicks coach after skid ]

Several of Howard’s advisers and other members of his inner circle were unaware of his change of heart until early Thursday morning.

Prior to Howard’s interview, the Magic hurriedly explored the trade options for their All-Star center and engaged the New Jersey Nets on a potential blockbuster deal, sources said. The Magic weren’t willing to end trade discussions until Howard made a commitment to stay long-term with the franchise. They fear losing him in free agency without receiving any real compensation. Orlando officials weren’t expected to suspend trade talks until Howard followed through with his pledge to sign the waiver form.

As one Western Conference executive told Yahoo! Sports. “This is a historic debacle.”

After telling reporters Tuesday night that he hoped to remain with the Magic through the end of the season, Howard reiterated the same message to teammates at a meeting in San Antonio on Wednesday. Howard told teammates that he was “all in” for the rest of the season then proceeded to tell each player what he needed to do for the Magic to win the championship this season, three players told Y! Sports. Howard didn’t commit in the meeting to staying beyond this season.

Howard later had lunch with three teammates in which he told them he planned to opt into the final year of his contract and would remain with the team through next season, a league source said. Howard called Magic CEO Alex Martins from the table and also informed him of his intentions, the source said.

For Howard to eliminate the early termination option from his contract, both he and his agent, Dan Fegan, had to sign waiver paperwork. Before the Magic’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, Howard told team officials he wouldn’t be signing the forms.

“Dwight doesn’t want to be the bad guy,” one source involved in the process said of Howard’s past 24 hours. “He doesn’t want to be unpopular. He flaked out.”

NBA: Wallace Trade Fits Portland Plan (HoopsWorld)

Posted March 15, 2012

The Portland Trail Blazers and New Jersey Nets have agreed in principle (pending league approval) to send forward Gerald Wallace to the Nets in exchange for injured center Mehmet Okur, forward Shawne Williams, and a protected 2012 first-round pick.

The deal was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The pick is New Jersey’s own, top-three protected.

The Blazers came into this trade deadline with the plan to clear the contracts of players not part of their future from their 2012-13 cap. Wallace has a $9.5 Player Option he could exercise. Williams also has a Player Option, but for only $3.1 million.

The net result for the Blazers is they have a higher cap figure for 2011-12 (an additional $4.1 million, putting them just under the luxury tax line) but clear an additional $6.4 million for next season (the difference between Wallace and Williams) while also getting themselves a lottery pick in one of the deepest drafts in recent history.

Depending on how Williams fits in the rest of this season, he may be encouraged to decline invoking his Player Option and become a free agent this July.

If Williams stays with the Blazers they will be roughly $22 million under the cap this summer before they re-sign Nicolas Batum and pay two first-round picks (their own and this one from Jersey). They are still trying to trade Jamal Crawford’s $5.2 million Player Option in 2012-13 for an ending contract as well, which would clear more cap space.

The short-term lineup impact for the Blazers will have Batum moving back his natural small forward position in the starting lineup and Wesley Matthews should move back to starting at shooting guard. Okur, who hasn’t played since January 25th with back issues, likely won’t figure too much into Portland’s rotation, at least initially. Williams will come off the bench behind Batum, but the Blazers may decide to see what second-year forward Luke Babbitt can give them on a nightly basis, forcing Williams to compete for minutes.

Portland will have to waive a player to clear a roster spot. It could be Okur, injured center Greg Oden, or reserve forward Chris Johnson.

Stay tuned – Portland probably isn’t done yet.

From a New Jersey perspective, this fits their goals too. With Dwight Howard no longer a trade possibility and not a free agent until 2013, they need to add talent to Deron Williams to keep him around and defer their potential cap space to 2013. Adding Wallace works to that end, but the cost of the lottery pick has to be considered high, though they do still have Houston’s 2012 first-round pick (top-14 protected).

A healthy lineup of Williams, rookie MarShon Brooks, Wallace, Kris Humphries and Brook Lopez isn’t a team to discount in the East, if they do in fact put that team on the floor. The Nets may not be done yet either.

NBA: Ramon Sessions to Lakers (ESPN)

Posted March 15, 2012

The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired point guard Ramon Sessions from the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of a multi-player deal that will bring the Cavs the Lakers' 2012 first-round pick, according to league sources.

The Cavs also will send young wing player Christian Eyenga to the Lakers and veteran forward Luke Walton will be going to the Cavs. The Lakers' will keep their draft pick this year if they miss the playoffs. As part of the deal, the Lakers also will have the right to swap first-round draft position in 2013 with the Miami Heat's first round pick, which the Cavs own.

Sessions is averaging 10.5 points and 5.2 assists for the Cavs this season and fills a need for the Lakers, who have been in the market for a true point guard. Sessions is earning $4.2 million this season and is scheduled to earn $4.5 million next season, which is his option.

Walton, who has battled injuries over the last several years, has one year and $6.1 million left on his contract -- he's played in just nine games this year. Eyenga has played in just six games and has spent time in the D-League.

NFL: Justice Traded To Colts; Dixon Signed (PhiladelphiaEagles.com)

Posted March 14, 2012

By Bo Wulf

The Eagles continue to make moves, as the team announced Wednesday the re-signing of defensive tackle Antonio Dixon and a trade of offensive tackle Winston Justice. Justice and a 2012 sixth-round pick will be sent to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2012 sixth-round pick.

The Eagles move up from 17th to second in the sixth round, while also saving a reported approximate of $4.2 million on the salary cap. Justice, a second-round pick out of Southern Cal in 2006, played in 47 games (31 starts) in six seasons with the Eagles. In Indianapolis, he will be reunited with Colts general manager Ryan Grigson, who had long been with the Eagles.

Dixon, meanwhile, was a restricted free agent tendered at the second-round level. The 26-year-old defensive tackle was originally claimed off waivers prior to the 2009 season opener. The powerful, run-stuffing defensive tackle has played in 35 games (10 starts) for the Eagles, compiling 62 tackle, 3.0 sacks and one blocked field goal. He spent much of the 2011 season on injured reserve with a torn triceps.

NBA: Bucks Trade Jackson, Bogut to Warriors, Monta Ellis to Bucks (ABC/AP Source)

Posted March 13, 2012

By CHRIS JENKINS AP Sports Writer

A person with direct knowledge of the deal says the Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to trade center Andrew Bogut and forward Stephen Jackson to the Golden State Warriors.

The Bucks will receive guard Monta Ellis, forward Ekpe Udoh and center Kwame Brown, the person confirmed to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported the deal on its website Tuesday night.

The trade represents a parting of the ways between the Bucks and Bogut, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft who has struggled with injuries. It also allows the Bucks to rid themselves of Jackson, who had fallen out of favor with coach Scott Skiles.

NFL Brandon Marshall Traded To Bears (ESPN)

Posted March 13, 2012

By Adam Schefter | ESPN

The Miami Dolphins have traded receiver Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears for two third-round picks, according to league sources.

The sources said Chicago will send its third-round pick in 2012 and 2013 to Miami for the Pro Bowl wideout.

The trade reunites Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and Marshall, who played together in Denver. Jeremy Bates, who was Cutler and Marshall's offensive coordinator in Denver, is also the Bears' passing game coordinator.

The Bears were in search of a big-play target to complement Cutler. Chicago hasn't had a receiver with a 1,000-yard receiving season in nine years.

Dealing Marshall allows the Dolphins to add to its draft war chest as new coach Joe Philbin attempts to turn Miami around. However, it also deprives the Dolphins of the type of weapon that intrigued free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning.

NFL: St. Louis Rams admit willingness to trade No. 2 pick

Posted February 28, 2012

The St. Louis Rams are willing to trade the second overall pick of the April draft.

Chief operating officer Kevin Demoff said Tuesday that the team would make a deal under the right circumstances, but has not made any commitments despite a report late Monday that a trade had already been decided. He said new coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead went to the NFL combine with an open mind.

"I think coach Fisher and Les have been upfront that we will listen to offers for the 2 pick," Demoff said in an email to The Associated Press. "I didn't see anything in the report that differed from their statements."

Quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are expected to go 1-2 in the draft, with Indianapolis holding the top pick. The Rams need plenty of help but are set at quarterback with Sam Bradford, the first overall pick in 2010.

For Andrew Bailey, coming in from the bullpen at Fenway Park is a special feeling.

He’ll experience that a lot more next season.

New manager Bobby Valentine found his new man for the back end of the Boston bullpen on Wednesday when the Red Sox obtained the All-Star closer and outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the Oakland Athletics for outfielder Josh Reddick, infield prospect Miles Head and minor league pitcher Raul Alcantara.

In the deal, first reported by ESPN, Bailey gives the Red Sox a reliable ninth-inning guy to replace the departed Jonathan Papelbon, who signed a $50 million, four-year contract as a free agent with the Philadelphia Phillies in November. (MORE>>>)

The 2013 selection could climb as high as the first round, as well, and will be based on how well Palmer performs in Oakland.

Palmer demanded a trade this offseason, threatening to retire if Cincinnati didn’t comply. When the Bengals refused to deal him, Palmer simply stayed away — he never formally retired but also did not join Cincinnati for the preseason or any portion of the regular season. (MORE>>>)

NFL Football: Brandon Lloyd Traded To St. Louis Rams

Posted October 17, 2011

The Denver Broncos won't have one of their best weapons when the Kansas City Chiefs play them twice this season. Jason La Canfora reported on Monday morning that the Broncos have traded WR Brandon Lloyd to the St. Louis Rams.

No word on what the compensation is but the Broncos were reportedly seeking a third round pick.

This means that Lloyd is out of the AFC West, which is good news for the Chiefs. Lloyd has two touchdowns against the Chiefs in Denver last year and he's a solid receiver so taking options away from Tim Tebow helps the Chiefs in the short-term. (MORE>>>)
