NCAA Football: No. 19 Oklahoma Beats Iowa 31-14 in Insight Bowl

Posted December 30, 2011

Blake Bell ran for three touchdowns to help No. 19 Oklahoma survive a late rally and a crashing camera to beat Iowa 31-14 in the Insight Bowl Friday night.

Oklahoma (10-3) didn't get a particularly great game from quarterback Landry Jones and wasn't effective on the ground, either. Once considered national-title contenders, the Sooners grinded it out against the gritty Hawkeyes, ending a difficult year that included the death of linebacker Austin Box in the offseason.

Jones threw for 161 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and Bell put the game away with a 21-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: No. 3 Sooners roll to 47-17 win over Kansas

Bob Stoops knew that Ryan Broyles was one catch away from becoming the NCAA's career leader, so the Oklahoma coach called for a pass play that sent his All-American wide receiver on a deep post route.

Might as well set the record in style.

The senior hauled in a 57-yard touchdown pass from Landry Jones in the first half Saturday night, and Broyles finished with 13 catches for a school-record 217 yards and two scores as the third-ranked Sooners rolled to a 47-17 victory over Kansas. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Oklahoma Crushes Texas-ESPN

The state of the baby-faced Texas Longhorns secondary is apparently so fragile that defensive coordinator Manny Diaz felt the need to stress the silver lining Saturday afternoon.

Hey, how about that second half?!

"I thought we continued to battle," Diaz said. "This team has a spirit that's hard to break. Even though the scoreboard didn't look the way we wanted it to look, I thought we finished well."

Saying the scoreboard didn't look the way the Longhorns wanted after a 55-17 loss is kind of like saying all that fried food at the State Fair is fattening.

Texas' spirit might be hard to break, but the perception that the Texas pass defense might be prepared for elite competition burst like a bubble at the Cotton Bowl. This game turned into a laugher quickly in large part because the Longhorns' secondary was easy pickings for Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Landry Jones and his receiving corps. (MORE>>>)
