NBA: Hawks C Horford out 3-4 Months With Shoulder

Atlanta Hawks All-Star center Al Horford will miss at least three months with a shoulder injury, a major blow to a playoff contender in the Eastern Conference.

The team announced Thursday that Horford tore his left pectoral muscle in the first quarter of Wednesday night's game at Indiana. The injury will likely require surgery, stunning a team that has made the playoffs four years in a row and is off to a solid start with wins over Miami and Chicago in the early going. (MORE>>>)

NFL Football: Report- Detroit Lion Jahvid Best is advised to consider ending his year

The Detroit Lions' problems at running back aren't getting any better.

A day after the Lions' trade for Ronnie Brown was voided, CBSSports.com reports that starter Jahvid Best has been advised by people close to him "that he needs to strongly consider sitting out the year" after suffering his second concussion in two months last week against the San Francisco 49ers.(MORE>>>)

UFC/MMA: Back injury to sideline Carwin until 2012

Former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin announced on his web site Saturday that he has suffered another back injury.

Carwin expects the injury to sideline him until next year.

“As I ramped up my training for UFC 141, my back locked up,” Carwin said. “It wasn’t like the [Brock] Lesnar fight, but my back just tightened up and I froze.

“I scheduled an MRI and the results showed that my disc in my lower back is into the nerves. My doctor gave me two options: retire and I could probably go on for a few years without surgery or I could undergo surgery and continue fighting. (MORE>>>)

NFL Football: Report- Texans' Williams will miss rest of season

A report early Monday seconded what SI.com’s Peter King reported on Football Night in America Sunday night: The Texans will be without Mario Williams for the season.

Williams apparently suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Sunday’s Houston loss to Oakland and will undergo surgery this week, which would force Williams to the injured reserve. Williams came off the field in the first quarter after sacking Oakland QB Jason Campbell. He walked to the locker room under his own power. (MORE>>>)
