First, Frank McCourt tried to buy his hometown Boston Red Sox. Then he sought the Anaheim Angels. Finally, in late 2003, McCourt, a land developer, triumphed: he and his wife, Jamie, bought the Los Angeles Dodgers for $430 million.

Now, after an ugly divorce, an angry battle with Major League Baseball and a decision to put the Dodgers into bankruptcy, McCourt on Tuesday night agreed during a meeting in his lawyers’ offices in Manhattan to sell the Dodgers in a process that will be supervised by a federal bankruptcy court judge. Frank McCourt and Major League Baseball are moving closer to settling their bankruptcy hearing, with McCourt possibly agreeing to sell the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

A sale of the franchise likely would also include Dodger Stadium and the parking lots surrounding the stadium, according to the report. The Times cites anonymous sources familiar with the negotiations. Such a package could bring back a record $1 billion or more, the Times estimated, although the report adds that McCourt has not decided to sell. (MORE>>>)

MLB Baseball: Frank and Jamie McCourt reach settlement involving Dodgers

Frank and Jamie McCourt have reached a divorce settlement under which she would get about $130 million and relinquish any claim to a share of the Dodgers, multiple people familiar with the agreement told The Times.

The settlement would remove Jamie McCourt as an obstacle to Frank McCourt's plan to retain ownership of the team by selling the Dodgers' television rights in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The agreement also would appear to set up a winner-take-all court showdown for the Dodgers between Frank McCourt and Commissioner Bud Selig. (MORE>>>)
