NFL: Richardson flashes speed, power at Alabama pro day ()

Posted March 29, 2012

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Trent Richardson flashed speed and power at Alabama's second pro day.

The former Crimson Tide tailback, linebacker Courtney Upshaw and safety Mark Barron worked out for NFL scouts, general managers and coaches on Thursday. All three are projected first-round draft picks.

The 227-pound Richardson says he bench-pressed 225 pounds 25 times. NFL.com says he was unofficially clocked from 4.45-4.49 in the 40.

Richardson is considered the top running back available and a potential top 5 pick. He even knocked down Cleveland Browns running backs coach Gary Brown in a blocking drill.

The Browns, who have the fourth pick and need a tailback, were also represented by head coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert.

Richardson, Upshaw and Barron all were recovering from injuries at the NFL combine.

NFL: Trent Richardson, Dre Kirkpatrick, Dont'a Hightower Entering NFL Draft

Posted January 12, 2012

As expected, three key pieces to Alabama’s championship run are leaving for the NFL, Tidesports.com reported.

RB Trent Richardson, LB Dont’a Hightower and CB Dre Kirkpatrick are expected to announce today at a news conference that they will bypass their senior seasons at Alabama.

The Crimson Tide won its second BCS title in three years Monday, whipping LSU, 21-0, in New Orleans.

In his most recent mock draft, Sporting News draft expert Russ Lande projects Kirkpatrick to be the first Tide player off the board at No. 7 by Jacksonville. Lande projects Richardson will go 16th to the New York Jets. Lande does not have Hightower being selected in the first round, but does have Tide teammate, safety Mark Barron, being taken 17th by Cincinnati.

NCAA Football: Don't look for a rematch between LSU, Alabama

Posted November 6, 2011

The folks on CBS couldn't get past the postgame interview with LSU coach Les Miles without bringing up the possibility of a rematch with Alabama in the BCS Championship Game.

No. 1 LSU's 9-6 overtime victory over No. 2 Alabama on Saturday was exciting, to be sure, but it's hard to justify putting the same two teams back in the national championship game.

The reasons are many. First of all, LSU still has a big game against Arkansas to play and must win the SEC championship game to reach the national championship game. But considering Oklahoma State, Stanford and Boise State remain unbeaten, it seems quite unlikely that Alabama would also find its way into the title game in New Orleans. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: LSU, Alabama ready for old-style football

Posted November 5, 2011

The LSU and Alabama showdown promises to be a throwback to old-school football.

Both top-ranked but barely tested LSU and No. 2 and mostly unchallenged Alabama are built on power runs and run-stuffing defenses in a time when spread offenses are in vogue and huddles are optional.

"If you want to see 1970s smashmouth," Alabama tight end Michael Williams said, "then this is what you want to see right here." (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: The wait is over for No. 1 LSU vs. No. 2 Alabama

Posted November 3, 2011

You might have heard there's this college football game in Tuscaloosa this weekend. Kind of important. Might have a few people attending. A few more might watch on television. Tickets could be a little expensive. And a few members of the news media might show up. All they're playing for is an expected trip to New Orleans in January.

In reality, there's no downplaying the importance of this week's No. 1 vs. No. 2 clash between LSU and Alabama. The stakes are huge. The interest is huge. And the anticipation has been building with the teams on a collision course since the start of the season. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Tigers' Lee went from backup to SEC's most efficient quarterback

Posted November 3, 2011

It was halftime of LSU's Nov. 8, 2008, home game against No. 1 Alabama. The score was tied 14-14, thanks in part to Crimson Tide safety Rashad Johnson's 45-yard interception return for a touchdown against LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee late in the second quarter. For Lee, a redshirt freshman from Brenham, Texas, who'd been pressed into action following the offseason dismissal of expected starter Ryan Perrilloux, it was one of a staggering seven pick-sixes he would throw that season.

In a hallway in the back of the Tiger Stadium press box, writers and assorted dignitaries from the adjoining luxury suites mingled while noshing on hot dogs or watching highlights on a nearby TV. SEC commissioner Mike Slive, spotting the wife of an LSU administrator walking by, reached out to shake her hand. She returned the gesture, but with a dour look on her face. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Alabama's Trent Richardson can make Heisman statement vs. LSU

Posted November 2, 2011

Alabama running back Trent Richardson already had his Heisman highlight: a dazzling 76-yard run vs. Mississippi (see video below) that included numerous broken tackles and a jaw-dropping start-stop juke move. "That would have thrown my hip out its joint," LSU coach Les Miles said.

Richardson could do more than that with a big performance Saturday against an LSU defense allowing 76.6 yards rushing a game, third in the country. He could bolster his already strong Heisman resume and become the second Tide runner to win the award in the last three years. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Game week arrives for much-hyped Alabama-LSU

Posted November 1, 2011

It was hard to escape the hype around the LSU-Alabama game when both squads were off last week. Now, it's downright impossible.

Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower had just finished celebrating a win over Tennessee two weeks ago when he saw the first ad for the LSU game. When Barrett Jones chatted with family and friends back home in suburban Memphis, they didn't want to talk about the Vols game.

Like everybody else, they wanted to talk No. 1 LSU versus No. 2 Alabama. (MORE>>>)

NCAA Football: Alabama and LSU Mean Business

Posted October 24, 2011

College football’s latest “Game of the Century” is now officially on the radar, the upcoming Nov.5 matchup between Louisiana State and Alabama, the nation’s top two teams, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Both powerful Southeastern Conference foes will be idle the week of October 29, giving the game a Super Bowl-like two week buildup and essentially assuring they will head into battle as No. 1 (LSU) and No. 2 (Alabama).

It’s the kind of matchup that reminds us why the SEC is in the process of raking in $3 billion over 15 years from CBS and ESPN. (MORE>>>)
