NFL: Cowboys fill big need by signing CB Brandon Carr (SportingNews)

The Dallas Cowboys snagged much-needed cornerback help Wednesday, signing former Kansas City Chiefs player Brandon Carr to a five-year deal worth a reported $50.1 million, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Secondary play was a major weakness for the Cowboys last season, and they recently released veteran cornerback Terence Newman.

With Cortland Finnegan (St. Louis Rams) and Eric Wright (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) already off the market, signing Carr became even more imperative for the Cowboys.

Carr, 26, who started every game for the Chiefs during his four years in Kansas City, had a career-high four interceptions last season. At 6-0, 207 pounds, he has the size to match up with bigger receivers.

The Cowboys needed a player of Carr's caliber to help against receivers in the wideout-rich NFC East. In addition to holdovers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks of the New York Giants, and DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin of the Philadephia Eagles, the Washington Redskins this week signed Pierre Garcon.

Carr should be a fixture in the Cowboys' secondary the next few years, and the Cowboys might add another corner or two in the draft.

Also on Wednesday, the Cowboys signed Kyle Orton to back up quarterback Tony Romo and replace Jon Kitna, who retired.
